«The Trap: What Occurred to Our Desire of Freedom» is really a BBC documentary sequence by English filmmaker Adam Curtis, properly recognized for other documentaries which includes The Century from the Self along with the Energy of Nightmares. It began airing inside the United Kingdom on BBC Two on 11 March 2007.

The sequence consists of 3 one-hour programmes which explore the principle and definition of freedom, especially, «how a simplistic model of humans as self-seeking, nearly robotic, creatures led to today’s idea of flexibility.»

Person freedom is the desire of our age. It is what our leaders promise to give us, it defines how we think of ourselves and, repeatedly, we have gone to war to impose freedom close to the globe. But if you stage back again and appear at what freedom really means for us these days, it is a unusual and limited type of liberty.

Politicians promised to liberate us on the old dead hand of bureaucracy, but they have produced an evermore controlling process of social management, driven by targets and quantities. Governments committed to independence of selection have presided over a rise in inequality along with a dramatic collapse in social mobility. And abroad, in Iraq and Afghanistan, the attempt to enforce liberty has led to bloody mayhem plus the increase of an authoritarian anti-democratic Islamism. This, in turn, has helped inspire terrorist attacks in Britain. In response, the Authorities has dismantled long-standing laws designed to safeguard our flexibility.

The Trap is a sequence of 3 films by Bafta-winning producer Adam Curtis that explains the origins of our contemporary, narrow notion of liberty. It indicates how a simplistic type of human beings as self-seeking, practically robotic, creatures led to today’s thought of flexibility. This type was derived from ideas and techniques developed by nuclear strategists throughout the Cold War to control the behavior from the Soviet enemy.
